Chigunu Beach with the Cave of Beginnings│A power spot on Kouri Island with the Okinawan version of the myth of Adam and Eve!

This time, we would like to introduce you to Kouri Island’s hidden gem “Chigunu Beach”!
Chigunu Beach is a narrow sandy beach, so it is not suitable for swimming, but you can enjoy the beautiful sea that is unique to Okinawa.

In addition, Chigunu Beach has a sacred place called “Cave of Beginnings,” which is said to be the birthplace of humanity in Ryukyu mythology, and there is a legend that it is the place where a man and woman, who are the Okinawan version of Adam and Eve, lived.

During excavations, a pit-style dwelling from the Jomon period was discovered, and it is a historical place that has been cherished by the locals since ancient times, and is also a place that the locals cherish very much.

Diagonally across from the road leading down to Chigunu Beach, the stone monument below, “Uminai Umikii” (Goddess Unai and Ukii), is enshrined.

It says “prayers for children,” “prosperity in business,” and “good health.”It was also described as a god of matchmaking.

Kouri Island is also known as Koijima, an island full of romance where the creator first brought a human male and female (sister and brother) to earth.
The Sea God Festival (Unjami) is held on the last day of the boar in the seventh month after Obon in the lunar calendar, which testifies to the origins and depths of the Uminai and Ukii (Gods of Unai and Ukii).
On the altar of the Motoya shrine, statues of Uminai'' andUmikii” are enshrined as gods.

Access to Chigunu Beach/Beginning Cave

Chigunu Beach is located about 700m to the left from the Kouri Island Fureai Plaza at the entrance of Kouri Island.
There is no parking lot, so we recommend parking at the Kouri Island Fureai Hiroba parking lot (pictured below). It’s about a 10 minute walk from there.

On the right side of the road is the torii gate and shrine pictured below. Just across the street is Chigunu Beach/Hajime no Cave.

“Hajime no Cave” and “Chigunu Beach” each have different charms.
It is the perfect place for a trip where you can enjoy an extraordinary experience while experiencing the beautiful scenery created by nature and the legends of Ryukyu mythology. Why don’t you come and visit us at least once 😊
